South Jutland Symphony Orchestra

‘We are a regional orchestra – the orchestra of the entire region. Every week we play for audiences throughout southern Jutland, an area with more than 700,000 enthusiastic spectators.

With our roots firmly planted in the local community, we create magical moments whether we perform in Sønderborg, Tønder, Aabenraa, Haderslev, Kolding, Flensborg or Schleswig. At the Sønderjyllands Symphony Orchestra, we have an ambition that our presence and passion for music is always within reach and accessible to our audience.’

Christian Øland is the new chief conductor

‘A new era has begun for the Southern Jutland Symphony Orchestra. A time of great ambitions and a fresh musical outlook. At the forefront of the orchestra, on the conductor’s podium, now stands Christian Øland – a Danish conductor with Nordic roots, international experience and most of all: a deep love for classical music.

He already knows the orchestra. He has stood before it several times, conducting everything from great symphonies to adventurous family concerts. And now he will be at the helm of it. Not just for a concert or two, but for an entire journey.’

‘No two musicians are the same. Not even in our orchestra. From the skilled string players to the virtuoso wind players, each individual brings a unique sound to our musical ensemble. Here you can read about our musicians and learn more about the orchestra.

Each musician carries a unique story and background, which is reflected in their music. From their sources of inspiration and favourite composers to their personal approach to creating and exploring tones, there is much to learn about our dedicated and diverse ensemble.’

A brief history

The Danish Philharmonic Orchestra became a regional orchestra in 1963, but the roots go all the way back to 1936, when organist Haakon Elmer took over a string orchestra as conductor.

In 1941, this was transformed into the Danish Philharmonic Orchestra with director Sv.O. Hansen as chairman of the board. In 1946, the orchestra was transformed into the independent institution, which became the cornerstone of the current symphony orchestra’s existence. The Danish Philharmonic Orchestra was finally established as a regional orchestra in 1963 and gave its first concert on 22 September 1963.

In 2012, Larsen Strings entered into a partnership with Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester (Danish Philharmonic Orchestra) supplying the orchestra with high-quality Larsen Strings. Now re-launched as the Danish Philharmonic Orchestra, our partnership has proved more than mutually beneficial with invaluable feedback from musicians helping us to develop our range.

“The orchestra is, despite being years ago, my old and highly valued workplace. Several “old” colleagues are among my friends and it is therefore always a great pleasure both personally, but also musically to attend concerts and hear how the orchestra has evolved over the years.” – Laurits Th. Larsen
